Our mission…
“The whole is greater than the sum of its parts” (Aristotle). At ‘Grace Custom Bases’, we are guided by how this principle extends to collections as aesthetic compositions in their own right.
Drawing on a background in art collecting and product design, together with a deep knowledge of traditional woodworking, we design bases and display systems that quietly enhance the presence of each work, while bringing coherence to the collection as a whole - whether in a private residence, exhibition, or gallery context.
We believe that a refined and restrained mode of presentation reveals what is often referred to as the collector’s eye. Our approach is therefore not to transform objects, but to articulate their relationships - allowing a collection to be experienced as a unified visual statement.
Whether working with private collectors, art galleries, or institutions, we aim to offer a considered perspective on display - one in which a collection is not just installed, but carefully orchestrated.
The founder, Jan-Hendrik de Groote, is a product designer and dedicated collector of African art, with a particular focus on craftsmanship and material quality. ‘Grace Custom Bases’ was established as a studio practice through which this dual sensibility - design precision and connoisseurship - elevates artworks and collections, enhancing their presence, coherence, and perceived significance.
